After marrying South African farmer Dick Turner (John Thaw), Mary (Karen Black) gives up her city-dwelling life and successful career to be with her new husband in the country. Mary's attempts to adjust to rural life don't go well, leading to adultery and, eventually, tragedy. Based on the novel by Doris Lessing, the film explores the divisive racial politics of South Africa through the eyes of Mary and the men around her, many of who are unrepentantly racist.
